Casio Abe is the author of several books on Japanese film and popular culture, including a critical work on television viewing, A Media Called Shinji Nojima, and a study on amateur pornography, The Principles of Adult Video. Abe is a professor of popular culture at Rikkyo University.

About the director. Takeshi Kitano was born in Tokyo in 1947. His films include Sonatine (1993), Kids Return (1996), Fireworks (Hana-Bi), recipient of the Grand Prix at the 1997 Venice Film Festival, Kikujiro (1999), and Brother (2001). In addition to his films, Kitano writes poetry and novels, stars in seven TV programs each week, and publishes columns in various magazines and newspapers.
