Sia Figiel was born in 1967. She is the author of three novels—where we once belonged, they who do not grieve, and The Girl in the Moon Circle—and a collection of prose poetry, To a Young Artist in Contemplation. where we once belonged won the Commonwealth Writer's Prize Best First Book for the Southeast Asia/South Pacific region. She has traveled extensively in Europe and the Pacific Islands, and has had residencies at the University of Technology in Sydney, the East-West Center in Hawaii, the Pacific Writing Forum at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji, and Logoipulotu College in Savaii. Figiel has been on extensive reading tours; recent travels have taken her to New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, Los Angeles, London, and Germany. She is also known as a performance poet and has appeared at several international literary festivals. She has worked at a wide variety of jobs including teaching English, housecleaning, waitressing, and serving as an au pair while working on where we once belonged. She is also a painter and has exhibited her paintings in Samoa and Germany. She lives in Samoa.
